On Sept. 15, a University administrator was jogging near the dome parking lot when a male in a BMW approached her and asked to buy the socks she was wearing for $20. She kept running until she saw a PSO who assisted her and did a search of the campus, which proved negative.

With the spotlights and red carpet, an observer might have expected to see a movie star like Tom Cruise or Jennifer Lopez make an appearance. But on Sept. 16, the other stars were put aside for 10 local high school students who participated in Hofstra's Documenting Diversity film project. Friends and family gathered for the big event in the John Cranford Adams Playhouse at Hofstra University to watch documentaries created by the students that capture the lives of total strangers. The mood at the event was jovial, as the happy students took in the crowd of cheering fans.

Dozens of vendors overflowing with trinkets, a guitar orchestra and lots of tomato sauce. South Campus was the site of the 18th annual Italian Experience Festival on Sunday, Sept. 19 where booths of over 50 local vendors covered the quads and Italian music was the backdrop for the entire afternoon. The festival is one of the largest of its kind in the country and has become a Long Island tradition.

The official Hofstra card policy changed for the 2010-2011 school year, requiring students to pay up to $50 each time a card is lost.  Prior to this year, students paid a flat fee of $10. According to Hofstra Card Services, the new regulations state that the card replacement is now $10 for the first offense, $25 for the second offense and $50 for all remaining offenses.

The Frank G. Zarb School of Business was included in the list of "Great Schools for Marketing/Sales Majors for the 2011issue of the Princeton Review. This is a great honor for Hofstra, as The University has been taking great strides to improve its academic reputation.  In recent years, the business school has been increasing in national rankings. Forbes recently ranked Zarb as the 51st best school for an M.B.A and U.S. News and World Report ranked Zarb as the 63rd best graduate business program in the nation.

Alpha Phi Alpha Chapter President Andre Derricotte is proud of the pageant to take place Oct. 26 in Monroe Lecture Hall. Typically around seven women contend for the prize of a scholarship.  The scholarship varies depending on attendance, so they're encouraging as many students participate out as possible. The Miss Black & Gold will move on to compete with students of St John's, Stonybrook, and Old Westbury.  The winner of the preliminaries vies for the coveted title in Bermuda on Nov. 6 Show your support and attend the 7th Alpha Phi Alpha Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant in Monroe Lecture Hall from 8:30 to 11 PM on Oct. 26!

Hofstra's 75th anniversary will be marked by new beginnings.  New dining services unveiled, new faculty have been appointed, and a new medical school, which will welcome its first class in Fall 2011, is anticipated by students. 

 

The Hofstra University Museum is hosting "Acquired Riches: Highlights from the Hofstra University Museum" at the Emily Lowe Gallery and "75 Stories for 75 Years" at the David Filderman Gallery and the Axinn Library in honor of Hofstra's 75th anniversary.  "Acquired Riches" started on Sept. 1st and "75 Stories for 75 Years" will begin on the 23rd.  Both events will have an opening reception to commemorate the University's 75th anniversary. 

University President Stuart  Rabinowitz and Vice President Herman Berliner signed a "2+2 Joint Admissions Agreement" on Aug. 30 with Nassau Community College President Donald Astrab and Vice President Jack Ostling. This agreement begins a system where eligible students entering Nassau Community College will be automatically admitted to the University for their junior and senior years, and receive a Hofstra University degree.
