Subway riders spoke out-and New York City listened. After a series of public hearings throughout the tri-state area, Governor Eliot Spitzer announced on November 21 that the base subway and bus fares would stay at $2-for now. According to Spitzer, the proposed 25-cent increase planned for February will remain unchanged through 2009.

Logistical issues such as security measures and parking specifications for next fall's presidential debate will be determined in the following two months, Joseph Barkwill, the University's vice president of Facilities and Operations, said. Barkwill said University officials will be meeting with Secret Service representatives as well as the Commission on Presidential Debates in January to discuss which areas of the campus might be restricted for the Oct.

Peg Finucane, a beloved University professor and former Newsday editor, died the morning of Sunday, Nov. 18, from an infection developed during her struggle with pancreatic cancer. The wife and mother of one was 57 years old. Friends and colleagues remembered Finucane as a kind, good human being, an accomplished journalist, and a passionate teacher.

-An operations manager at The Dizzy Lizard Saloon on Nov. 7 notified public safety that two University students reported that while talking outside the bar they were robbed by two armed males.   -A University student received a summons on Nov. 7 when she failed to stop her car while entering the North Campus and had to be pulled over by Public Safety.

A resolution to change the current meal plan system failed Tuesday during a Student Government Association senate meeting Andrea Schwartz, the Student Services chair, proposed a resolution to alter the meal plan system for fall 2008. She said the legislation was in response to complaints from students that it is too easy to run out of meal points before the end of the semester.

When you look at this young man, you would never think he is from Roswell, Georgia, a suburb about 15 minutes from Atlanta. Micah Jesse, a junior at the University, is very much a city dweller; he has known since he was young that he was going to move to New York.

When The Chronicle of Higher Education released the results of its annual survey of college presidents' pay, it came as no surprise that Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz was the highest paid on Long Island. It's been the case before, and Hofstra is a large private institution.

There are times when humorists go too far. For example, just the other day, Stephen Colbert completely missed his exit on the highway. There are some things that should not be said, but sometimes humorists cross the line between funny and offensive. Unfortunately, I was that humorist last week.

After a break-up, many of us travel down the "let's still be friends" path. But this is easier said than done. Most of the time you want absolutely nothing to do with your ex. You really don't even want to be friends with him or her. When you go from a certain level of intense intimacy with a person, being anything less is often too difficult to deal with.
