Down 11-3 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning, the Hofstra baseball team scored eight unanswered runs against Sacred Heart University to force extra innings in a game that was cut short in 12th due to impending darkness. The non-conference contest, held on Wednesday May 8 at University Field, ended in an 11-11 tie. This marks Hofstra’s first tie game in over nine years, when they tied with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on April 28, 2010.
As the months leading up to graduation have dwindled down, a lot of people have asked me if I am excited to graduate. The answer to that question has remained the same every time:
“I’m looking forward to graduating, but I’m not looking forward to leaving The Hofstra Chronicle.”
When I look back on my four years at Hofstra, I quickly realize that I owe everything I have accomplished to The Hofstra Chronicle. The Chronicle led me to change my major to journalism, gave me the experience to land an incredible internship and has gotten me where I am today.
When Major League Baseball (MLB) introduced Statcast in 2015, a new statistical era began for baseball. The sport has evolved so much over the years, and general managers across the league are starting to become more interested in the analytics and statistics to build a successful team. Additionally, as coaches and managers are beginning to adapt to the day and age of these young players. Not only are things changing in the MLB, but in all levels of play.
As the Hofstra softball team’s season comes to a close and seniors graduate, the program must regroup. The team’s goal this offseason will be to assess their roster, train and improve and to ultimately forge a path back into the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship scene next year. Designated player Alexis Goeke, a junior from Bordentown, New Jersey, will be pivotal in accomplishing that goal, as her markedly-improved play this year has earned her a permanent spot in the team’s lineup and turned her into a key piece of the team’s puzzle.
When junior Myles Mensah steps onto the baseball diamond, he represents much more than Hofstra University. As the only current African-American player on the Hofstra Division I baseball team, and only the second since 2011, he represents an entire race in a sport that historically lacks racial diversity.

Even with a two-hour weather delay and wet and rainy conditions this past Friday, May 3rd, the Hofstra Pride women’s lacrosse team defeated the Towson Tigers 11-8 to advance to their sixth CAA title game – first since 2013 - where they will face the James Madison University Dukes. The Pride’s only CAA Championship came back in 2007 when they defeated JMU in the title game.
