Women's soccer blanked by No. 6 PSU in their first loss of the season

The Hofstra women’s soccer team was unsuccessful in its efforts at Jeffrey Field visiting the No. 6-ranked Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions on Sunday, Aug. 25. The 6-0 loss brings the team to a split record of 1-1 for the season.

The Nittany Lions came out of the gates strong on Sunday, building a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play. An err attempt by the Pride’s Lucy Porter was the team’s best shot at closing the gap early, as Penn State would score once more in the half to give them a 3-0 lead by the buzzer.

The Pride could not revive their chances entering the second half, as a quick goal just one minute into the half from Penn State seemed to deflate the team. The Nittany Lions would score twice more en route to a 6-0 shutout over the Pride.

Only two Hofstra starters took shot attempts during the match, Porter and Sabrina Bryan, with neither being shots on goal. Brianna Passaro also tallied a shot, and the team’s three shots on goal were taken by Jordan Littleboy, Krista Agostinello and Anja Suttner. In goal, freshman Skylar Kuzmich recorded four saves against 10 shots on goal from Penn State in just her second game with the squad.

Penn State’s dominant performance extended to the box score, with five players recording goals, three of which were assisted on. Frankie Tagliaferri led the game with two goals, and also tallied the most shots on goal in the contest, having taken three. Shea Moyer had two of the match’s three assists. Also notable was their success in drawing fouls, as Hofstra finished the contest with nine fouls committed and a yellow card against Suttner.

The Pride will look to end its season-opening road trip with a win to put themselves above .500 when they travel to Providence, Rhode Island to take on Brown University on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
