It would take a while to list every award that Trey Rogers has received in his five years at Hofstra University. As a star member of the wrestling team and a pre-medical biochemistry major, Rogers has shown ambition like no one else.
The Hofstra wrestling team headed to Tulsa, OK, from March 16-18 for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships. The Pride sent two wrestlers: Jacob Ferreira at 184 pounds, who qualified for the tournament with an at-large bid, and Trey Rogers at 197 pounds, who qualified after placing 5th at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) championships.
Adrian St. Germain trained his whole life to be a great wrestler. In 2019, the three-time high school state champion experienced the culmination of his 14 years of work when he started wrestling at Hofstra University. He redshirted in his first year, and in January 2020, he won his first collegiate match. Things were going well, and he was just starting the wrestling career he had always dreamed of. Less than a year later, though, that was all taken away, and St. Germain faced the hardest challenge of his life. Confronting a long recovery and an uncertain future, the lessons he learned from wrestling would help him exceed every expectation.
The Hofstra wrestling team earned split results between their two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) duals on Feb. 11th. The Pride lost to Harvard University 11-25 before defeating Sacred Heart University 43-6.
On Feb. 3, Hofstra’s wrestling team earned a big win at home over George Mason University. The Pride won 26-16 in their third dual meet win this season.
The Hofstra wrestling team fell short in their Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) match-up against Binghamton University, 27-8, on Friday, Jan. 26, in Vestal, NY. Justin Hoyle and Trey Rogers earned the Pride its only two wins of the dual.
The Hofstra University wrestling team began the new year by finishing 20th in the highly competitive Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, TN, which included several ranked teams, with Jacob Ferreira placing fifth in the 184-pound weight class.
On Thursday, Dec. 22, the Hofstra wrestling team lost to American University, 21-16, in their first dual of the season at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
The NCAA transfer portal has always been a part of the collegiate offseason. With it, student-athletes from all sports can find new homes to continue their academic and athletic careers more quickly and efficiently. This was exactly the case with graduate student wrestler Jacob Ferreira.
From Dec 2-3, The 40th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational, the year's most difficult in-season wrestling tournament, featured 33 teams, including the Pride from across the country.
On Saturday, Nov. 20, the Hofstra University wrestling team competed at the Black Knight Invitational, hosted by the United States Military Academy, in West Point, NY. Four members of the Pride placed in the tournament, with Justin Hoyle taking fifth, and Jacob Ferreria, Trey Rogers and Zachary Knighton-Ward all placing second in their respective weight classes.
The Hofstra's wrestling team was back in action this weekend on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, at Freedom High School, where the 15 wrestlers from Hofstra finished the competition with a total record of 26-20.
The Hofstra’s wrestling team had their first competition of the season on Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Princeton Open. The team for the competition consisted of 13 wrestlers, none of whom are projected to be starters this season.
On Saturday, October 29, the Hofstra wrestling team held wrestle-offs in the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. The twelve matches of the event functioned as a simulated dual between different members of the team and determined the starting lineup for the upcoming season.
Making his third NCAA Tournament appearance, red-shirt senior from Uniondale, New York, Zachary Knighton-Ward's season was officially finalized on Thursday night, March 17, at the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
For the 118th EIWA Championship, the Hofstra wrestling team headed upstate to Ithaca, New York, to take on various wrestlers across the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) conference. This year’s championships weren’t the first rodeo for some, as Ricky Stamm, Ross McFarland, Charles Small, Trey Rogers and Zachary Knighton-Ward all competed for the Pride at last year's EIWA Championship. Justin Hoyle also previously competed, but at the 116th Championship in 2020.
Freshman Joe McGinty from Monroe, New York, is one of the numerous members on the wrestling team exceeding expectations this year.
For the first time in two weeks, the Hofstra wrestling team was back in action when they traveled to Daskalakis Athletic Center to take on Drexel University on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Dragons defeated Hofstra 27-13 and Long Island University 30-6, both of which were Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponents. After the two victories, Drexel improved to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in league play, whereas Hofstra is now 2-10 overall and 1-4 against EIWA opponents. Overall, the Pride is now 19-19 all-time against Drexel.
