Women's soccer falls to Elon in double overtime

In what was a hotly contested game throughout, the No. 25 Hofstra Pride women’s soccer team fell on the road to the Elon University Phoenix 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday, Oct. 24. The loss dropped the Pride to 13-3-1, with a 5-2-1 record in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.

It was a defensive battle between the Pride and Phoenix through the first 45 minutes of the match. The Pride had five shots on goal through the first half, while the Phoenix were held to only two. It wasn’t until the 55th minute when midfielder Lucy Porter capitalized on a penalty kick, giving Hofstra a 1-0 lead in what was Porter’s third goal of the season.

Elon would then respond with just over 10 minutes left to play, when Phoenix forward Lydia Totten found the back of the net in the 78th minute, to tie the game up at one apiece. The remaining time in regulation was scoreless, as the Pride and Phoenix would go into overtime.

In the first overtime, Hofstra held Elon at zero shots on goal, while the Pride had six shots on goal, including a near game-winner from forward Olivia Pearse, whose shot hit the left post, narrowly reaching the back of the net. Elon keeper McKenna Dalfonso made two saves in the first overtime.

With both teams still knotted up at one apiece, another 10 minutes were needed to help decide this crucial conference match.

The Pride were unable to get any shots on goal in the second overtime, while the Phoenix were able to get two shots on goal, which resulted in the game-winning goal by Phoenix midfielder Carson Jones in the 107th minute of the match. Despite only having two shots at goal, both of those shots resulted in a score, as the Phoenix prevailed to defeat the Pride in what was a defensive slugfest.

The Pride return home later this week to wrap up regular season play on Sunday, Oct. 31, as they take on the Cougars of the College of Charleston. The Pride will look to end the regular season on a high note, as they head into CAA Tournament play.
