New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced that certain entertainment venues can begin operating at reduced capacity beginning on Friday, April 2, according to ABC7. While the new regulation change applies to numerous art spaces, most Broadway shows will remain closed to the public. Certain theaters with more flexible spaces will host some live programming.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which took place on Sunday, Aug. 30, was unique compared to every previous ceremony. MTV had originally planned to hold the VMAs at Barclays Center until the COVID-19 pandemic made that impossible. But as the saying goes, the show must go on.
Food insecurity has reached new heights since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. When Hofstra and other universities across the U.S. announced they were transitioning all classes to an online format due to COVID-19, Hofstra’s performing arts departments came together to formulate plans to continue teaching their programs.

Since entering this period of isolation more than a month ago, which most expect will last well into the summer, the entertainment industry has had to adapt from its traditional methods of engaging with its audience and pushing content into the digital world. When stay-home orders were put into effect across the country, the arts community was almost immediately shut down. Theaters closed, companies stopped performing and talk shows delayed taping. Almost everyone in the arts was not only out of a job, but unable to do what fulfills them and what fulfills the world.

On the evening of Thursday, March 12, all 31 current Broadway shows were canceled until further notice. This was a combined order from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Charlotte St. Martin, the president of the Broadway League. In the announcement, Gov. Cuomo said that “gatherings with 500 people or more will not be permitted in NY state.”
