After a crushing loss at the hands of Delaware, the Hofstra field hockey team was able to easily handle the Towson Tigers 9-0.
Sophomore phenom Simca Schoen racked up a career-high three goals in the win. In addition, freshman Samantha Schlegel dropped two goals and an assist on the Tigers, and Stella Schoen added a goal and two assists.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Saltus recorded her first career shutout, only making two saves, a testament to how strong this Pride attack can be.
Simca opened the scoring for the Pride with consecutive goals within the first 50 seconds, the first off a penalty corner with junior Colby Hussong that had Claudia Marin Samper assisting, while the second was off a pass from her older sister Stella.
Schlegel added the next two Hofstra goals just 1:54 apart, scoring her sixth of the year from Marin Samper and then adding her seventh off a pass in front by Stella Schoen, who notched her 12th goal of the year just 42 seconds later.
Head Coach Kathy De Angelis was certainly pleased with the team’s performance, stating, “When you put up that many goals you know it’s a team effort.” De Angelis would go on to praise the defensive structure of the team, allowing them to stay on the attack for a bulk of the game.
Hofstra outshot the Tigers, 44-3 for the game including 21-0 in the second half. Towson finished with 22 saves between Emilee Woodall (15 saves) and Megan Boyle (7 saves), and added two defensive saves.
Hofstra now moves to 11-4 on the year, and 1-1 in CAA play. As for the Tigers of Towson, they fall to 2-11 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
The Pride will take a 12-day break before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 23 at CAA foe Northeastern University.
