Hofstra baseball drops series to Elon

The Hofstra University baseball team lost their series against the Elon University Phoenix in a 2-1 pitching duel on Saturday, April 13.

The Pride has yet to win a Coastal Athletic Association series this season and now stands at 3-8, ranking last in the conference.

Carlos Martinez had the start in today’s game as his recent surge from the mound has impressed the Hofstra staff. Martinez currently holds the second-best ERA on the team with 7.23. He was facing Elon’s Justin Mitrovich on the mound.

The Phoenix got things going in the third inning when Charlie Granatell hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Tank Yaghoubi to give Elon the 1-0 lead.

With a lead over the Pride, both pitchers continued to lock in and dominate the lineups. Martinez finished the day with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing two runs off five hits with six strikeouts. However, he received the loss in the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Martinez let a Will Vergantino double extend Elon’s lead 2-0.

Mitrovich pitched seven innings with six strikeouts and allowed one run on three hits. He received the win for Elon with his performance.

Mitrovich’s only mistake came in his last inning of work, allowing Hofstra’s Alex McCoy to hit deep over the left field wall cutting the lead to 2-1. Cade Henry came in relief for the Pride and held Elon at bay.

The Phoenix’s Ben Sieracki came in to finish off Hofstra with a one-run lead. Sieracki had two strikeouts, allowing no runs as he put down the save for the series win against the Pride.

Hofstra only had three hits in the game compared to Elon’s eight. Those three hits came from Will Kennedy, Penn Sealey and McCoy.

The final game match of this three-game series against Elon is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
