Hofstra women's basketball snaps losing streak with win over Towson

The Hofstra University women’s basketball team is finally back in the win column as they snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 58-44 victory over the Towson University Tigers on the road at the TU Arena in Towson, MD. The Pride improved to 8-13 on the season with a 2-8 mark in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play; Towson sits at 13-9 and 5-6 in conference play.

Sunday marked the 37th straight day without a win for The Pride, and the 52nd without a road win. Early on, it looked like the streak would extend to nine games, as the Tigers opened the game on a 10-0 run. After that though, it was all Hofstra. Freshman guard Micaela Carter opened the scoring for The Pride with her first three points in what would become a career day. Carter scored 11 points, her season and career high in points. The Pride ended the first quarter on a 14-2 run.

After the first quarter saw both teams make massive runs, the second was a much more balanced affair. The Pride held onto the lead for most of the frame, never leading by more than five. Towson snatched the lead back at the end of the half on a Quinzia Fulmore jumper. Fulmore finished the game with six points.

The Pride suffocated the Tigers’ offense after the first half, only giving up 15 second-half points to Towson. Hofstra held the Tigers to a 27.7% field goal percentage and did not allow a single 3-pointer in the second half for the second time this season.

Sorelle Ineza led the scoring for The Pride with 13 points. This marked Ineza’s third consecutive game in double figures, and her ninth such game this season. Towson is no stranger to Ineza’s scoring prowess, as she torched the Tigers last year for 21 points in a 58-57 win in Hempstead.

Zyheima Swint posted her fourth double-double of the year, terrorizing Towson on the boards with 11 rebounds to go with 10 points. The CAA’s leading rebounder raised her season average to 8.7 rebounds per game with this performance. Swint is now averaging 8.3 points per game as well.

Brooke Anya is number five on the conference rebound leaderboard. Anya is pulling down 7.5 rebounds per game, with seven boards in the game against Towson. Anya also added 10 points, bringing her season average to 7.5.

The leading scorer for the Tigers was Kayla Morris, scoring a season-high 14 points on 7-13 shooting.

The Pride are out of the CAA basement with the win, with 2-9 Hampton University now in last place. Hofstra will try to keep moving up the standings on Friday, Feb. 16, as they head about 45 minutes east for a rivalry game against Stony Brook. Tip-off is set for 6:31 p.m. at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena in Stony Brook, New York.
