Hofstra concludes season with loss to Stony Brook

On Saturday, April 28, the Hofstra University Pride women’s lacrosse team traveled to Stony Brook, New York to face the Stony Brook University Seawolves in the final Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) matchup of the season that saw the Pride lose 18-6. Hofstra finishes the season with a 4-12 overall record and 1-6 in conference play, missing out on the CAA Championship tournament.

Hofstra took the initial lead in the first period with a goal from Lauren Coletti, assisted by Katie Kelly. The Seawolves didn’t take long to take control on the offensive front, scoring three in a row. Jaden Hampel, Kailyn Hart and Ellie Masera were the goal scorers. The Pride scored their second after Haley Dillon received a yellow card for Stony Brook, resulting in Hofstra playing a player up. Megan Flannery scored the goal marking her 12th of the season, with the assist going to Kerry Walser. Stony Brook increased their lead by three as Masera scored two more goals to finish the period 5-2.

In the second period, the Seawolves had a spark of offense that allowed them to outscore the Pride 7-2. The Pride had some good looks on the net, but nothing was able to sneak through. Morgan Mitchell scored the first two, followed by Charlotte Verhulst and Masera, each scoring one. Chloe Sedlar cut off the Seawolves’ scoring drive with a goal from a free position shot, marking her third of the season for the Pride. With a little over a minute left in the period, Coletti scored her second of the game, with Rachel Graff being credited with the assist. In the final minute, Stony Brook’s Hart and Mitchell each scored one a piece to give the Seawolves the 12-4 lead.

The Pride scored their fifth two minutes into the third period. Sedlar scored her second of the game, with the assist going to Taylor Mennella. Walser then received a yellow card allowing Hampel to score another with Stony Brook playing a man up. Alexandra Fusco, Verhulst and Courtney Maclay scored the final three goals for the Seawolves as they led 16-5.

Mennella kicked off the final period by scoring the sixth and final goal for Hofstra, marking her 31st of the season with the assist going to Kelly. Hart and Masera scored the final two goals for Stony Brook, making the final score 18-6.

Hofstra struggled this game with turnovers, as they had 17 compared to Stony Brook’s nine. The Seawolves also dominated draw controls as they had 21 compared to the Pride’s six.

Coletti and Sedlar led the team with two goals apiece. Luchianna Cardello made eight saves during her time protecting the cage.

The Pride concludes their season finishing seventh in the CAA standings.
