Double OT loss for field hockey

Double OT loss for field hockey

Despite tallying a career-high 19 saves for goalie Pieke Roos, the Hofstra University field hockey team suffered a brutal 2-1 double overtime loss at home against the Drexel University Dragons. During their tie-breaker with 17 seconds left in the second overtime period, Drexel’s Eline Di Leva put one through the net, giving Drexel their eighth win on the year.

“The energy that came from the bench really just translated right into my playing, even through double overtime,” Roos said. “At that point, you don't function at your own energy anymore, you go completely based on other people. It really was a crazy game, and I'm glad I could have kept it running for that long; happy with my own performance but a bit bummed that we lost.”

The first quarter went pretty quietly until Di Leva scored her first goal in the 14th minute.

In the second quarter, both teams picked their defensive pressure up a notch. Hofstra held Drexel to four shots, but Drexel didn’t let the Pride shoot at all.

The Dragons pressed on, putting five shots on goal in the third quarter that were all swiftly denied by Roos in net.

Still down 1-0 to Drexel, Hofstra’s Cami Valor broke through with her first goal of the season. It was made just under five minutes into the frame on a pass from the left field from teammate Gabriela Espinoza.

After a scoreless first overtime period, it was Drexel’s Di Leva who found the back of the net to break the stalemate off a saved-shot rebound.

Hofstra’s next appearance on the field will be against the University of Maine on Sunday, Oct. 1, at home at 12 p.m.
