Hofstra field hockey falls 3-2 in overtime to Quinnipiac

The Hofstra University field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime against Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, on Sunday, Oct. 15. Hofstra drops to 5-9 with this non-conference matchup while Quinnipiac moves to 6-7.

Despite the loss, goalkeeper Pieke Roos kept up a contentious effort with five saves throughout 62 minutes of action.

The Pride’s two goals each came quickly in the second and fourth quarters from Tara McNally and Silvia Vetter. Additional shots by Hofstra came from Cami Valor in the second quarter and from Lauren Lucas in the second and third quarters.

It was a quick-paced and energetic game for both sides of the field. The Pride offense quickly retaliated against the Bobcat’s first score by Julianna Cappello in the 19th minute. During a penalty corner two minutes later, Hofstra team captain McNally eluded a defender with a spin and chipped it in over Quinnipiac keeper Cristina Torres to tie the game up, scoring her third goal this season.

A quiet third period gave way to both teams vying to break the tie in the fourth, which the Bobcats capitalized on during a penalty corner in the 56th minute with a goal from Micaela Grajales.

Seemingly in the blink of an eye, Vetter launched an arching shot from midfield near the left boundary to score her fifth goal of the season and tie the game just in time for the Pride, with under three minutes left in the fourth.

A green card near the end of the fourth quarter afforded a one-player advantage for Quinnipiac in overtime. The game-winner from preseason conference honoree Stella Tegtmeier came on a streaking play through the middle that brought her the length of the field.

A standout showing in net kept the Pride in the game consistently, which featured several kick saves and dives from Roos. She faced 22 shots, which is the second-most she has faced all season. Roos still maintains an average of under two goals allowed per game.

The Bobcat’s shot leaders were Tegtmeier and Lucia Pompeo with six apiece, while additional shots were taken from Katie Shanahan, Sophia Pompeo, Grajales and Cappello. Two of Quinnipiac’s three goals came assisted, with Cappello using an assist from Pompeo and Grajales getting an assist from Shanahan and junior Kate Zamagni. Tegtmeier was the lone unassisted goal.

Quinnipiac outshot Hofstra 23-5 and 9-3 in terms of shots on goal, while only making one save to the Pride’s six. The Bobcats improved to 3-15 all-time against Hofstra with their first win since 2014.

Hofstra travels to Boston, Massachusetts, to take on Northeastern University on Friday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. to resume conference play.
