Drexel downs women's lacrosse despite Whelan's career day

The Hofstra Pride women’s lacrosse team continued their skid by dropping their third straight game by a score of 19-8 to the Drexel University Dragons on Saturday, April 3 at the James M. Shuart Stadium.

The Pride honored their seniors along with their families as they had the chance to visit Shuart Stadium for Senior Night. 

The Dragons got off to an early two-goal lead within the opening five minutes of play thanks to goals from Karson Harris and Jamie Schneidereith.

Katie Whelan cut the deficit to one with her first goal of the game and got the Pride on the scoreboard, but the Dragons went on a seven-goal run shortly after.

Lucy Schneidereith chipped in on two goals in the run with Harris adding one. Corinne Bednarik and Courtney Dietzel each contributed two goals, adding to the Drexel lead.

Alyssa Parrella had her first goal of the game with 17:40 left in the half, cutting the Pride's deficit to seven goals. 

Cara Moreau brought the Dragons to double digits in scoring with her first goal of the game, but Grace Langella answered back quickly for the Pride, bringing the deficit back to seven goals.

The Dragons finished the half on a four-goal run, and they led the Pride 14-3 heading into halftime.  

When play resumed, Cara Scanio scored her first collegiate goal for the Pride. After a Bednarik goal for the Dragons, Parella and Whelan each added a goal for Hofstra to cut the deficit to nine.

Moreau added her second goal of the game off an assist from Bednarik to bring Drexel’s advantage back to 10 goals.

Both teams traded goals throughout the closing minutes, and the Dragons ultimately defeated the Pride 19-8. 

Jess Smith took the loss for the Pride. She collected five saves while obtaining four ground balls. In addition to Whelan’s three goals, she had three assists during the afternoon.

Parrella currently has 325 career points and is tied for the all-time Colonial Athletic Association record for 325. 

“We need to show up in the first half and be able to play hard," said Hofstra head coach Shannon Smith. "I thought that we dug ourselves too big of a hole and we [have] got to just come together right now, [and we have got] to figure it out and we just [have] got to play better.”

The 3-4 Pride will hit the road for their next contest, taking on the James Madison University Dukes on Saturday, April 10 in Sparks, MD.
