Stony Brook edges women's lacrosse in Battle of Long Island

The Hofstra women’s lacrosse team dropped their second straight game in a 12-8 loss against the Stony Brook University Seawolves on Thursday, March 26 at the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The Pride traveled to Stony Brook looking to overcome a recent loss against the Boston College Eagles.

The Wolves opened the game on a three-goal run after Bridget Considine found the back of the net twice and Kailyn Hart chipped in on one herself.

Taylor Mennella cut the deficit to two goals as she got the Pride on the board with a free position shot.

The Seawolves then went on a four-goal run as the Pride saw themselves down by six goals with 7:58 remaining in the half.

Despite being down by six, Arianna Esposito responded for the Pride with her sixth goal of the season as she was assisted by Alyssa Parrella.

Parrella pushed the Pride closer with a free position shot which found the back of the net for her 24th goal of the season. With less than a minute remaining, Parrella chipped in with her 25th goal of the season as the Pride was down by three going into the half. 

Coming out of the half, Katie Whelan brought the Pride to within striking distance as she added her third goal of the season; but Considine answered with her third goal of the game giving the Seawolves a three-goal lead once again.

Alexa Mattera brought the Pride back to within two on a free position goal for her eighth of the season, closing the gap to within two goals.

After several moments, Ally Kennedy brought the margin to within three as she added another goal for the Seawolves until Espositio responded for the Pride with her second goal of the game.

Stony Brook pulled away from the Pride with a three-goal run as they led 12-7 until the final minutes of regulation.

Despite trailing, Kate Fiola adding the eighth goal for the Pride, the Seawolves had the upper hand as they defeated Hofstra 12-8.

Parrella had two goals and two assists while Whelan added two goals for the Pride.

Shannon Boyle and Sabrina Cristodero led the Pride in ground balls with two each.

Jess Smith took the loss as she nabbed 10 saves on the evening.

The Pride will open conference play when they face the Drexel University Dragons on Saturday, April 3 at the James M. Shuart Stadium. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
