Field hockey falls to James Madison in Virginia

After stepping into Virginia for two conference matchups, the Hofstra field hockey team left without a win. The Pride were on the hunt for redemption on Sunday, Oct. 3, against the James Madison University (JMU) Dukes but lost 5-1. The Dukes have been weathering a difficult schedule all season that has seen them face three nationally ranked opponents this season.

A little over eleven minutes into the game, the Dukes drew first blood courtesy of senior forward Aubrey Scott King’s first goal of the season. It was the 7th time this season James Madison opened the scoring. No more scoring showed for in the first quarter and JMU held the Pride to no shots in the quarter at all while putting on three of their own. 

Exactly 30 seconds into the second quarter Mercedes Currie scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the game at one. Currie leads the Pride in goal scoring. The tie only sustained for 18 seconds as the Dukes capitalized off of a penalty corner goal scored by Diede Remijnse and James Madison again took the lead. Almost four minutes later, Emily Harris scored the insurance tally to put the home team up 3-1. Remijnse followed up and scored her second of the game with less than a minute and a half remaining in the second quarter to pull away further 4-1. 

The third quarter saw the home team take a 5-1 lead thanks to Mikenna Allen’s second of the season. No more goals showed for the rest of the game. Hofstra took two shots all game, both on goal, compared to JMU’s 13 on goal on 23 attempts. 

Up next, Hofstra hosts the two-time Colonial-Athletic-Association-winning Delaware Blue Hens on Friday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m. at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.
