Tino's Jersey Reviews: New England Patriots
Hello everyone! Welcome to Tino’s Jersey Reviews!
In our last review we took a look at the Cleveland Browns’ blast from the past. If you missed that one, go check it out! In today’s review we take a look at the team who holds the longest active consecutive playoff streak appearances, starting with the 2009-10 NFL playoffs, and they have won three Super Bowls during this time… Let’s review the New England Patriots.
First thoughts- Right out of the (deflate)gate I commend the Pats for not having a throwback look. Although I do love the Pat Patriot look from the 1960’s up until the 90’s, too many teams have decided to go back to what there was rather than forward to what could be. It was originally speculated that the Patriots would be getting a new alternate\throwback option for 2020. When I saw these, I was pleasantly surprised, even though their new primary is the old color rush look that was introduced in 2016. The away is a brand-new option that matches well with the pants.
Some people may be underwhelmed by this decision, but the fact that they changed at all was a smart move. Especially in a time where the dynasty we have all known for the past 20 years could be at its end. With Tom Brady, Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins, and Stephen Gostowski (to name some notables) signing with new teams, or being released this offseason this organization needed to give the fans something to look forward to for next season.
Do these uniforms do that? I wouldn’t say so. But, it definitely represents change and growth within the organization as a whole. Moving on from Tom Brady isn’t an easy thing to do, but replacing the uniform he has worn for 20 years helps with that.
As for the jersey, (that’s why we’re here right) I personally love the look of the blue pants. It matches well with the stripes at the top, and it connects the whole thing together. The old look with the silver line in the jersey and the pants being silver as well wasn’t terrible. But it only matched with the chrome helmet. It was getting old (like tom brady). While we are on the topic of pants, I must say I am very disappointed in one minor decision that was made upon this release. No. White. Pants. COME ON!!! You have an all-blue look which is clean but no all-white??? Think about it, with the added white pants they now have the opportunity to run four different uniform combinations throughout the season. Plus, you could see the colored home jersey with white bottoms at Gillette Stadium occasionally.
Now I do have a very scientific hypothesis for why they only have one pant option as of right now. What they are probably going to do is wait to reveal the all-white option for a Thursday night game and call those their new “color-rush” or alternate looks. Not a terrible plan, but it is one that gives us less uniforms.
"As we started to think about the 2020 season and a new decade, we began to envision what we wanted our uniforms to reflect," J CMO of Kraft Sports and Entertainment Jen Ferron said. "The success of the 'Color Rush' uniform that we've worn for the past couple of years had us thinking that we didn't need to make real substantive changes, rather we could make modest changes to our home uniform and then use a complementary version with those same aesthetics for our away uniform. The look for the initial "Color Rush" uniform was inspired, in part, by the uniforms of Patriots past. The strong, bold stripes on the sleeves are a nod to the red throwback uniforms.”
Life-long Pats fan Tim Crowley, who lives about ten minutes away from Gillette Stadium had this to say when he saw the updated look, “The one color rush game the Patriots had on the road was in 2017 at Tampa Bay, where they wore their regular white jerseys with white pants, which looked incredible. I was a major fan of the old jerseys, and those looked spectacular in the five Super Bowl’s they wore white in during the Brady era. I cannot see myself repping the new away jerseys, but I absolutely endorse upgrading the original color rush home jerseys to the team’s new primary uniform.”
Okay, okay enough of the Patriot talk. Let’s get on to the review…
An alternate becomes the primary, a brand new away but in the same design, but no white pants as of now.
Tino’s Rating: 7.3
The Pats had potential to be the first team to crack the eights, but without white pants and even a third option I couldn’t let them see over 7.5… I appreciated the nod to the past without going back all the way like the Browns and Bucs. Maybe these new uniforms will help all of New England to forget about Tom leaving… eh I don’t think so.
