Season 2 of “Loki” is a superhero-studded adventure

Season 2 of “Loki” is a superhero-studded adventure

The popular Marvel Studios series “Loki” has returned with its second season, released on Disney+ on Thursday, Oct. 5. The new season is a direct continuation of the events from the finale of Season 1, which ended with Loki and Sylvie encountering “he who remains,” who was revealed to be a variant of Kang the Conqueror, the current main villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Season 1 was praised for its well-paced episodes, fluid writing and stellar performances by both Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston.

With the return of the show, we also see the return of many beloved characters, such as Mobius, played by Owen Wilson, and Casey, played by Eugene Cordero. The purpose of this season is to establish the threat and presence of Kang to prepare audiences for the upcoming “Avengers” movies, in which he will be the focused villain.

Kang made an appearance earlier this year as the main antagonist of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which was released on Feb. 17. The film set up Kang as the next big threat filling the role Thanos played in the previous two “Avengers” movies. Season 2 of “Loki” is set to develop the character even more.

Right off the bat, Season 2 is very different from the first season in terms of dynamics. Season 1 opened with Loki being captured by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and beginning to grow as a character while growing a friendship with one of the TVA’s agents, Mobius. As the season progressed, Loki fell in love with a variation of himself named Sylvie, and their relationship was being fleshed out. With this second season, however, Loki is stuck in two different timelines and is trying to figure out how to stop Kang while searching for a missing Sylvie.

There is a lot to unpack so far with Season 2 of “Loki,” and if one has not been caught up with recent events in the MCU, it could be confusing to the average viewer. The show is built up of over 10 years of context and events.

Episode 1, titled “Ouroboros,” was released on Thursday, Oct. 5. The first episode of the new season reintroduced the impending threat of Kang and Loki’s race against time to stop him.

Episode 2, named “Breaking Brad,” was released on Thursday, Oct. 12. The second episode built up Loki and Sylvie’s complex relationship while amidst danger within the TVA. There will be a total of six episodes within Season 2.

With the recent controversy surrounding Jonathan Majors and his assault charges, domestic abuse charges and upcoming trial, many are wondering if Kang, Majors’ character, will be recast. A trial date for Majors has been set for Wednesday, Oct. 25, in New York City. As of now, Marvel Studios has announced that they will continue to work with Majors; however, depending on the outcome of the trial, the future of Majors’ continued work under Marvel Studios and Disney may cease.

“Loki” has generally been regarded as one of the better Disney+ Marvel shows that have come out in recent years, and many have waited in anticipation for the release of Season 2.
