Hofstra stumbles on road at Stony Brook, loses "Battle of Long Island"

By Gio Annatelli -- STAFF WRITER The Stony Brook Seawolves erupted for the game’s first seven goals and weas able to hold off 12th-ranked Hofstra Pride 13-5, on Tuesday night at LaValle Stadium. The Pride falls to 4-2 on the year while the 13th-ranked Seawolves improve to 5-1.

Captain Sam Llinares scored two goals in the loss after only recording one assist in the last two games. Fellow captain Brian von Bargen also tallied two goals for Hofstra.

For Stony Brook, three different players tallied hat tricks in the game, as Alex Corpolongo and Matt Schultz netted three goals apiece, and Brody Eastwood scored four in the game.

Within the first ten minutes of the game, the Seawolves went up six goals. Hofstra eventually went two-men up in the closing minutes of the first quarter, but Eastwood had other plans, taking it down the field and scoring a shorthanded goal to put the Pride down seven.

“You can’t dismiss the first quarter, they got us seven-nothing, we could never recover from that,” Hofstra head coach Seth Tierney said after the game.

Stony Brook scored on eight of their first 12 shots on net to take the big lead. Llinares tried igniting his team by scoring his team’s first two goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Pride entered the locker room down 8-3. Von Bargen scored in the last minute of the half from a feed by Brendan Kavanagh to cut the deficit to five.

Korey Hendrickson was the other goal-scorer for the Pride, getting his seventh of the season in the third quarter to bring his team within five. Stony Brook scored two straight goals in response to seal the deal and put the Pride away.

Streaks broken and streaks continued: Josh Byrne registered seven shots but saw his point streak end at five games. This is the first time Byrne was held without a point in his young Division I career. With the two goals, von Bargen extended his goal and point streak to five games, currently the longest on the Pride.

“The disappointing part was that we didn’t play Hofstra lacrosse tonight,” Coach Tierney said. “We’re going to have regret over this one.”

Llinares, who is on the Tewaaraton watch list, extended his career goal total to 86, moving him into sole possession of 12th place on the program’s all-time list. He passes Dom DiNardo and Mike Laudenslager on the list.

The Seawolves now trail the Pride, 4-3, in the all-time series, snapping its two-game losing streak to the blue and gold.

Hofstra will next be in action against Providence. They will be on the road at Anderson Stadium, with first faceoff set for 1 p.m.
