Pride falls victim to sweep against UNC-W after ninth-inning rally

By PJ Potter - Staff Writer Casey Golden’s late inning heroics was enough to beat Hofstra for the third straight game to complete the series sweep.

In the top of the 9th inning, the score was tied at three. Golden delivered a frozen rope over center fielder Steven Foster’s head to score Steven Linkous (2-for-5) and Zach Canada (1-for-1), which would be the game winning hit. Golden finished the game with two hits, finishing the series with four doubles and six hits.

Hofstra scored twice in the second inning to take an early lead off runs batted in from Eric Ferguson and Steven Foster.

The Seahawks would then score three runs over the next four innings to take the lead, 3-2. Linkous knocked in a runner on a fielder’s choice in the 3rd inning. Luke Dunlap, who went 2-for-3, hit an RBI single in the 4th. He rounded out the series with six hits. Kennard McDowell hit a triple to bring Terence Connelly in to score and take the lead.

In the bottom half of the 6th, Brian MacDonald tied the game on a single past the diving shortstop. He totaled two hits in the game and seven over the last three, raising his batting average from .260 to .303 over that span.

David Leiderman’s hitting streak is now at eight games (1-for-4 with a run scored). Brad Witkowski’s 11 game hitting streak came to an end today after going 0-for-2 with a walk, but has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.

Nick Kozlowski got the start for the Pride, his first since March 21st against Delaware. He tossed 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits and six walks, cutting his earned run average to 8.82.

Brendan Mulligan got the loss, his second of the year (1-2). He pitched the final 3.1 innings of the game and gave up the 2-run double in the 9th. He surrendered four hits and struck out one.

Josh Roberson started for UNCW and went 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three. Clay Lockamon and Austin Magestro combined to pitch for 1.2 and gave up no runs.

William Shepley was the victor for the Seahawks and is now 4-0 on the season. He pitched the last two innings, allowing no hits and striking out two.

The Seahawks improve to 28-8 (11-1 CAA). Hofstra is now 13-22 (3-12). The Pride take on NJIT in Newark, NJ on Tuesday.
