Hi.

Welcome to the official, independent student-run newspaper of Hofstra University!

Letter to the Editor

By Mike Petrow, a sophomore University student

Estabrook bathrooms may seem like a dangerous place on campus, but I assure you it is nowhere as dangerous as the Wellness Center. Whereas the dangers of Estabrook are purely fictitious, all the threat in the Wellness Center is real.

In autumn weather, people get sick, it is a fact. Hofstra needs a place on campus, for liability reasons, to send these sick students. Thus, the Wellness Center exists. Quite frankly, I would be better off not going at all. I say that sincerely.

My throat has been killing me for days; I prepare for swallowing and eating in fear of the pain. I go to the Wellness Center and after I am checked out, I a told, "I don't see anything wrong, you should be fine in a couple days."

I called up my mom and told her the news; she was pleased with the answer I got from the Wellness Center. I then ended up in the emergency room that very night. The doctor looked into my throat and immediately said, "Oh, you defiantly have an infection." I had Actute Pharyngitis. He mentioned if I didn't get medicated immediately, I would have to come back and literally have a syringe shoved down my throat to drain fluid. Yeah.

This isn't the first horror story I have heard as a result of the Wellness Center. Last year, my friend went to the Wellness Center complaining of flu-like symptoms. They gave her some cough drops to do the trick. What did the trick? A week in the hospital with an IV stuck in her arm.

The Wellness Center does absolutely nothing to help the students. Hofstra, I suggest some critical change or risk a possible lawsuit in the future from another like me.
