Letter to the Editor: Career Fair reached out to print employers

In response to your recent editorial "Lack of 'Fair' Career Fair," we would like to clarify for your readers the efforts made by both the Career Center and the School of Communication.

While it is true that Newsday was the only print organization to attend the Fair on Friday, Nov. 7, more than 20 print journalism firms were invited, including Artisan News Service, Associated Press, Bloomberg News, Conde Nast, Corporate Board Member Magazine, Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, Hachette Filipacchi, Island Publications, Long Island Press, Nassau Herald, National Journalism Center, The New York Daily News, Marie Claire magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Meredith Corporation, Newsday, Natural Awakenings Magazine, Time Warner, Transit Transit News Magazine, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Asian American Journalists Association. It is disappointing these companies and organizations chose not to come, but it was not for a lack of effort on the part of the Fair organizers.

Thirty-four other employers did send representatives and they saw almost 250 students, several of whom have already been offered internships. Students and employers alike gave the fair high marks in the exit survey; they agreed it was a useful job tool.

Fred Burke, is the Executive Director of the Career Center and Susan Murphy is the Assistant Dean of the School of Communication.
