Based on true events, “Hustlers” tells the story of a group of strippers who make a living scamming the rich men of Wall Street. The film focuses in on leads Ramona and Destiny, two dancers who form a friendship through the sex work industry. Set in New York City, the movie delves into the true meaning of “the hustle.”

Writer and director Lorene Scafaria took inspiration from a famous New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler. Scafaria made it her goal to portray these women in a light that isn’t often seen in today’s society: human. She wanted to create an epic story about them, making sure they were viewed as powerful beings. Scafaria even shot the movie likes a sports flick and compared the women to athletes. In a sit-down interview with Variety, Keke Palmer, who plays Mercedes in the movie, applauded the cinematic direction of the film.

The storyline stars Jennifer Lopez as the seasoned veteran of the strip club circuit. The 50-year-old mother of two made it her goal to put on a show for her audience – and a good one, at that. In preparation for this role, the A-list celebrity trained for months with aerialist Johanna Sapakie, who specializes in pole dancing. Bruises and all, the two worked side by side toward delivering a believable performance from J- Lo, as if working the pole was second nature for her. Interestingly enough, Lopez admitted it was one of the hardest things she’s ever done. However, the blood, sweat and tears may soon be worth it, with the rumors of the actress’s first-ever Oscar nomination in the works for her performance in the film.

Fellow musician Cardi B is another celebrity who knows a thing or two about the hustle. A former stripper herself, Cardi B now makes her way to the big screen in her motion picture debut. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cardi B reveals she had been offered a lead role, however, due to her busy schedule, she was bumped down to a supporting character. Regardless, the 26-year-old rapper and debuting actress knew she couldn’t pass up this opportunity. She felt that she could shed a light on what it’s really like working in a New York strip club.

Aside from the two Bronx natives, other prominent members of this diverse cast include Constance Wu (Destiny) and Lili Reinhart (Annabelle), as well as cameos from singers Lizzo and Usher.

“Hustlers” is a dramatic comedy that reels in top celebrities and explores themes of friendship, society and greed. The R-rated flick is out in theaters now, and with rave reviews and a possible Oscar in its future, “Hustlers” is sure to give the audience their money’s worth.
