Preview: Hofstra looks to take over CAA with win against rival Stony Brook

The Hofstra Pride men’s basketball team is at home this weekend as they take on the Stony Brook University Seawolves at the Mack Sports Complex on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The Pride is coming off a 76-72 win over the Towson University Tigers on Thursday, during which they trailed by eight points midway through the second half. From that point,  the Pride turned it around as Bryce Washington hit a series of clutch three-pointers off the bench that helped seal a win that moved his team into a first-place tie in the conference standings.

As much as Washington was the hero against Towson, Aaron Estrada was the star, as he posted 27 points against the Tigers in his third straight game scoring 25 points or more.  The CAA preseason player of the year, Estrada, looks to have lived up to expectations this season, averaging 21.6 points per game to lead the conference.

With everything going right for Hofstra as of late, Stony Brook has some catching up to do. They fell to Elon earlier this week while playing without one of their top scorers, Tyler Stephenson-Moore. The Seawolves sit at 8-15 this year and have lost five of their last six games.

This is the first of two matches between Hofstra and Stony Brook within a two-week span. The last time these two met was in December 2021, with Stony Brook getting the victory at home, 79-62. That win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Seawolves when playing the Pride. Hofstra leads Stony Brook in head-to-head matchups all-time, 19-5.

The Pride will hope for the momentum to carry into this game, especially with only a few weeks remaining in the regular season. They’re currently on a four-game winning streak and are 7-1 at home and will have an advantage over Stony Brook, who is 3-9 on the road.

Hofstra and Stony Brook will tip off from the Mack Sports Complex on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m. The game can be streamed on FloHoops and heard on 88.7 FM-WRHU. Live stats are accessible through GoHofstra.com.
