Softball wins final game against Charleston for series victory
After a split doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, Hofstra softball defeated the College of Charleston 5-1 on Sunday, March 24, to win the series 2-1 at in Charleston, South Carolina. With the win, Hofstra’s hot streak continues as they improve to 14-12 on the season, and have now won eight of its last nine games.
Madison Burns started for a second consecutive day for the Pride. She started the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday. In an impressive stretch, Burns has given up just one run through fourteen innings in two days against Charleston. She followed up her previous complete game shutout with another complete game. This time, however, she gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Charleston cycled through the lineup for the fourth time. She also walked six and had three strikeouts. Burns improves her record to 8-6 on the year.
Charleston’s starter Izzy Berouty was unable to perform at the same level for the Cougars. She went 4 2/3 innings giving up three runs (all earned) on seven hits and recorded just one strikeout. Her record is now 4-7. Charleston’s bullpen did not do much better, going 2 1/3 innings and giving up an additional two runs.
Hofstra got off to a fast start offensively as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a two-run home run by Meghan Giordano in the top of the first inning. The home run was her eighth of the season. She also scored a run later in the game. Casey Collins also had a big game for Hofstra, getting three hits and driving in a run. Angelina Ioppolo also drove in a run.
Kelly Sinclair drove in the only run of the game for Charleston.
The Pride will look to keep the hot streak going when they take on LIU Brooklyn on Thursday, March 28, at LIU Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. Hofstra won the last game against the Blackbirds 4-3 when the two teams faced each other on Wednesday, March 20.
