The Hofstra women’s basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak and picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win behind Boogie Brozoski’s 34 points in a 78-61 victory over Northeastern University on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

“This whole week at practice everyone competed,” Brozoski said. “We are at that point where we are tired of losing and we really want it now.”

Northeastern opened the scoring with an early three pointer, but the Pride answered quickly with one of their own and took control going up 18-12 by the end of the first quarter. The Pride opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run and closed on a 6-2 run to have a 12-point lead at the half.

The Pride continued to extend their lead in the second half going on a 12-0 run midway through the third quarter. The Huskies battled back in the fourth, going on a 12-2 run of their own, but weren’t able to complete the comeback as the Pride converted eight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Brozoski led all scorers with 34 points. Ana Hernandez Gil added 15 points and Marianne Kalin had a double-double finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pride. E’Lexus Davis and Jaylen Hines also contributed five assists.

Stella Clark led the way for the Huskies with 14 points, while Jess Genco added 12 points and three assists. Gabby Giacone finished with 10 points and three rebounds.

The Pride had a slight advantage in the paint outscoring the Huskies 26-24. They also outscored Northeastern in points off turnovers and fast breaks. Northeastern dominated the offensive boards resulting in a 12-5 advantage on second chance points.

Northeastern leads the CAA in points per game with 69.5, but Hofstra held them to 61. The Pride also scored a season-high 78 points, which is 17 more than the season average.

With the loss, the Huskies drop to 13-5 (3-4 CAA) and have lost four of their last five after starting the season 12-1.

For Hofstra, they move to 7-12 (1-6 CAA) and snap a five-game losing streak to Northeastern. This is Hofstra’s first win against a CAA opponent since Feb. 18, 2018 against Towson University and snaps a 10-game CAA losing streak.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of this group to find this win. We had a great tough week of practice and against a good Northeastern team to find this win it’s great momentum for this team,” head coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey said. “We are not even close to closing the book.”

The CAA schedule will continue for the Pride when they travel to UNC-Wilmington on Friday, Feb. 1.
