Korean pop has become increasingly popular over the past few years, and it will only continue to grow. Many artists and bands are making big names for themselves internationally, with a notable example being BTS. In fact, another K-pop group has taken the world by storm since its formation in 2016 – Blackpink!

During the past four years, the group has released successful singles, LPs and EPs with songs including “BOOMBAYAH,” “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” “Playing with Fire,” “As If It’s Your Last” and “Kill This Love” – some of which have broken records surpassing 1 billion views on YouTube. They have even increased their presence by collaborating with well-known pop artists such as Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga.

After much anticipation, Blackpink’s debut studio album, “The Album” was finally released on Friday, Oct. 2. The album consists of eight tracks and combines a variety of genres ranging from pop and hip-hop to rock, EDM and trap. Some of their songs include collaborations with Selena Gomez and Cardi B. The album’s musical arrangement, lyrics and execution all make it worth listening to.

This past year was definitely a fantastic opportunity for Blackpink to truly shine, as they were the first-ever K-pop group to perform at Coachella last year. Additionally, they embarked on a world tour and were nominated for several international awards, winning some in the process.

“The Album” has many songs to look forward to, but here are some that especially stand out.

“How You Like That” was released as their lead single in June 2020. The single has become increasingly popular due to its catchy and dynamic beat, in addition to the powerful and confident vocals by all four members. Although having a rather soft introduction, the song definitely builds up hype, ultimately deserving the title of album opener.

In fact, “How You Like That” broke five world records when it was released: “Most Viewed YouTube Video in 24 Hours,” “Most Viewed YouTube Music Video in 24 Hours,” “Most Viewed YouTube Music Video in 24 Hours by a K-Pop Group,” “Most Viewers for the Premiere of a Video on YouTube” and “Most Viewers for the Premiere of a Music Video on YouTube.”

“Bet You Wanna” is another collaboration, this time with Cardi B. This song is surprising on so many levels, with an amazing vocal performance by the group along with an extraordinary rap by Cardi B.

“Lovesick Girls,” which was released as the group’s latest single, is high energy and extremely uplifting. Additionally, it showcases a unique combination of old-style pop-rock, EDM and hip-hop, making use of multiple musical genres. It talks about picking yourself back up after a heartbreak.

“Pretty Savage” provides a shot of adrenaline. With hard-hitting verses, it delivers a message to both fans and critics that no matter what happens, Blackpink is not going anywhere.

Overall, the album was a success. There were a few tracks that could have been better, namely the song “Ice Cream.” “Ice Cream” is a collaboration with Selena Gomez, and it was highly anticipated prior to its release. Despite having a catchy and fun tune, the song is average. Selena Gomez’s addition along with Lisa’s verse are the only highlights, but the song is otherwise underwhelming.

Despite a few misses among the hits, this album packs a punch. “The Album” also serves as a good stepping stone for Blackpink as they look to build upon their success in the future. In fact, the group’s debut studio album shows that they can take on a wide range of musical genres and come up with something extraordinary while still sticking to their K-pop roots. The lyrics portray confidence and empowerment, which is motivating on every level.

There’s no doubt that the group is not only here to stay, but will go on to reach new heights. As they say, Blackpink is the revolution!
