Hi.

Welcome to the official, independent student-run newspaper of Hofstra University!

Dutch Treat: Emily Miethner

By Emily Rivard, Features Editor

Whether you know it or not, chances are you've seen Emily Miethner at some point on campus. She is seen on the giant televisions in the Student Center, a welcoming face on the University web site and even on the cover of University media publications.

If anyone is deserving of being recognized on campus, it is Miethner. A senior Fine Arts major with a concentration in design, she is involved in nearly every aspect of campus life.

As a former Pride Guide and Orientation Leader, Miethner has been one of the first to welcome new students on campus and embody the ideal University student.
From being the co-president of the Hofstra Association of Graphic Arts (HAGA) to an active member and founder of Women's Ultimate Frisbee and even directing the yearly production of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," Miethner has learned how to become involved and enjoy her time on campus.

"I really love working with all the people here," said Miethner. "There are a lot of great students at Hofstra—some of my best friends are involved in the clubs [that I'm involved in]."

Miethner seems most proud of her work with both HAGA and "Vagina Monologues." Concerning HAGA, she is responsible for workshops and career nights for fine arts students. "I find it rewarding…doing HAGA and helping people find out there are actually careers in the art field," she said.

After being in the "Vagina Monologues" for two years, Miethner directed the production last year and is responsible for hosting this year's sex toy raffle next Wednesday, February 10, at 8 p.m. in the Student Center Theater.

"I decided to revamp [the sex toy raffle] and it went over well, so we're doing it again. It's one of the most fun things I've done on campus."

Not only does she enjoy hosting the event, but is also proud to announce its success.
"Last year, we raised $9,000 for the Nassau Coalition Against Domestic Violence, so that was a big achievement and the most that they've raised through production and fundraising," Miethner said.

Off-campus, Miethner has interned at two record companies and is currently working as a marketing and events intern at "Time Out New York" magazine, for which she is in the city three to four times a week.

Not surprisingly, the free time that she does have revolves around the clubs she is in on campus. "Pretty much the clubs I'm involved in and Frisbee—it's kind of my hobby," she said.

When asked what she hopes to be remembered for, Miethner merely hopes that others learn the importance of being involved in clubs and activities. "I hope that a lot of people learn to be involved in a lot of things. You get to know a lot of people and it's really rewarding—you make connections and friends that last forever. Hopefully a lot of people get that idea too."

Whether it will be through her activeness in starting HAGA, her work with "Vagina Monologues," establishing the Women's Ultimate Frisbee team, or even through her smiling face on University publications, Miethner is sure to be remembered long after her graduation this May.
