Two students, Brad Sappington and Chris Weed at Goucher College, founded Humans Vs Zombies (HvZ for short) in 2005. The presentation Texting and Driving: Is It Worth Your Last Word? was held Wednesday, Nov. 3, by the Albany chapter of National Safety & Health council member Lisa Marcella. The Student Government Association's (SGA) meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 2 involved was cut unusually short.
Typically, SGA meetings typically consist of debate over new club proposals however, this was not the case at the association's first November meeting. Hopeful students Michal Ovadia and Jeff Colburn spoke about a new club, We Connect Now, which would be affiliated with Department Services for Students with Disabilities and the Career Center.
Stephen Dunn returned to his alma mater today, but for a different reason than most return to Hofstra: he came to read and discuss his Pulitzer Prize winning poetry.
Dunn graduated in 1962 from Hofstra with a degree in History, but also spent a large amount of time on the basketball court. Both of these experiences can be found incorporated into his poetry.
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2010, students from many different political backgrounds entered Dempster Hall to watch the unfolding of the midterm elections at the University event President Obama's Midterm Exam: 2010 Election Results Party. Here chairs and televisions were set up where students could choose to watch Fox News, MSNBC, CNN or NBC New York while tables were set up full of refreshments from pizza to cookies.
The mail center received a suspicious letter addressed to the President of The University on Oct. 20. Public Safety retrieved the letter and no further action was taken.
Drug paraphernalia was confiscated from a room in Alliance Hall on Oct. 20 during Health and Safety Inspections on Oct. 20. The paraphernalia was confiscated and the resident of the room was given an appearance summons.
Students piled into seats, lined plaza room walls and took up essentially every square inch of the Mack Student Center on Oct. 27for Hofstra's eighth annual Day of Dialogue. Since its premier in 2004 Day of Dialogue has received rave reviews from faculty and staff. Hofstra professor and Director for the Center for Civic Engagement Cynthia Bogard estimated that over 2000 students attended the event.
Nine students at Central Washington University in Ellensberg, Washington were hospitalized due to consumption of the popular alcoholic energy drink Four Loko. In the police report [http://bit.ly/4Loko2+], one female student admitted to drinking Four Loko and police found several large cans of Four Lokos lying around the house. The hospitalized students had blood alcohol levels ranging between .12 and .35. Any blood alcohol content higher than .30 is considered possibly fatal. A 23.5-ounce can of Four Loko can have an alcohol by volume rate of either 6 or 12 percent, depending on the regulation of the state that it's sold in.
Senators buckled down for a long night of legislation and debate Tuesday evening at the weekly Student Government Association (SGA) meeting. The meeting was called to order at 6:17 p.m. and within 15 minutes senators were locked in debate. First on the agenda Appropriations Chairman Jordan Baer and Academic Affairs Chairwoman Melanie Rosner purposed a bill amending the SGA constitution redefining office hour requirements. In their bill Baer and Rosner defined an office hour as "60 minutes dedicated to the Student Government Association outside of all other Senator and Cabinet member requirements and responsibilities."
Matt Dougherty threw a pie full of whipped cream and chocolate syrup at Phi Delta Theta member Nick Morgan in front of the Student Center. Students and walking tours watched and laughed while people threw pies at Morgan and his friends nonstop.
As Hofstra University celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) History Month, The Pride Network and Student Leadership and Activities have come together to coordinate an event, Threading Love for Youth,which contributes to Hofstra University's 75 Acts of Kindness. The purpose of the event is to allow students to come together and knit winter gear such as: handmade scarves, beanies, gloves, and mittens. The event began Oct. 1 and continues until Nov. 22.
