Hi.

SGA passes four clubs, in costume

By David Gordon, News Editor

It was almost like a pre-Halloween bash at the Student Government Association's (SGA) weekly meeting on Tuesday, October 27. Bowls of candy were passed around from senator to senator. A number of them event went as far as to wear their costumes (which ranged from Peter Pan to SGA Vice President Akeem Mellis).

During the meeting, four new clubs were passed, two senators were elected and it was announced that another had forfeited his membership. A new party cancellation policy for Hofstra USA was also passed.

The clubs passed were an acapella lab group called Hof Beats, Japanese Culture Club (described as a "gateway to Japan," for students by its representatives), Hofstra Wrestling Organization (formerly Hofstra World Order) and Students for Liberty, a group which, according to their representative, is "libertarian minded," and wishes to "inspire students to restore faith in the Constitution." They stressed that they are not a libertarian club and will not endorse political candidates.

Dan Mercia and Amanda Martin were elected as Senators. Kevin McCroary forfeited his Senate seat and was removed after having two unexcused absences from Senate meetings, committee meetings and missing his mandatory office hours.

The new Hofstra USA party cancelling policy, proposed by SGA Club Affairs Chairperson Ralph Dweck fines clubs 15% of their budget if they do not cancel their event no later than three weeks prior to the event. They must notify, in writing, the Club Affairs Committee Chairperson and the Student Activities Office.

The ongoing investigation into whether or not Phi Alpha Delta should be accepted as an SGA-recognized club is still ongoing. Originally set to be investigated by Senator Jared Berry, Mellis told The Chronicle "there are others who are looking into it, as well."

A new election rules proposal, set to be voted on this week, will now be voted on on November 3.

In the middle of the meeting, a person wearing a President Obama mask entered and began to distract the Senators.

It was former SGA President Peter F. DiSilvio, on campus to attend the Nassau County Executive debate.
