Men's Soccer Future Bright After NCAAs

By Chris Vaccaro

New Pride Records

Mathew Telling and Billy Chung now own the single season games played record (23), passing the previous mark of 21 held by 11 different players. Michael Todd took possession of the Pride single season shot record (71), passing the record of 73, which was previously held by Alan Bodenstein (1983) and Jeff Galluzzo (1989).

Gumbrecht in the Record Books

Goalie Matthias Gumbrecht put his name in the record books for the most games played by a goaltender (23), passing Jay Palmer's record of 21. Gumbrecht's 15 career shutouts put him in first all-time, passing Bill Murphy, who played from 1992-95. He's also played 49 games in his career, another Pride career record.

The previous was 47 held by Matt Mazzilli from 1985-89. Gumbrecht's 94 saves rank him first in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as well.

How Pride Faired in CAA?

The team ranked first in shots (287), games played (23), and saves (100). It was second in assists (35), and shutouts (8). Some unwanted statistics the Pride ranked atop the CAA were offsides (68) and fouls (362). It had 56 more fouls than the next team, James Madison University.

Todd Ends as Season Leader of the Big Stats

Once again Todd has proven to be a vital part in the Pride's offensive attack. His 24 points, eight goals and eight assists all led the team. Todd was tied for fourth in the CAA in points, and goals, and tied for first with three others in assists. He is also tied with one other for first with four game-winning goals this season, one clinched the CAA Championship, and another that secured a victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Other CAA Teams in College Cup

No. 16 Virginia Common Wealth University was the last team to receive a first round bye in this year's College Cup. It won 2-0 against George Washington in the first round, advancing to the round of 16 to face top-seeded Wake Forest, when it won on penalty kicks 7-6 after a 2-2 regulation tie. It'll play the University of California at Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals. No. 12 Old Dominion University also received a first round bye, but lost to Duke, 2-1, in overtime during the second round. The NCAA Final will be held at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Dec. 12 at 1 p.m.

Pride Says Goodbye to Six

Six seniors played their final game in a Pride jersey in the loss against the Terps. Midfielders Pablo Lara, Michael Hermann, Edison Lara, and Brandon Quaranta as well as backs Rich Bigus and James Bentley are all leaving the Pride.
